Get Beyond the Buzzwords

Realizing Equity & Inclusion in Your Company

Corporate diversity & inclusion training programs have become commonplace and have created a highly informed workforce. But what comes next?

Making it Real

Equity & Inclusion is only as real as the opportunities we have to apply it. Completing the equity & inclusion training definitely ‘checks the box’ – but that alone doesn’t make it real. Equity & inclusion becomes real when we apply it in our daily work, relationships, and interactions. Only in this way can we hope to eliminate the bias and discrimination that impacts so many of our diverse peers in the workplace. Without clarifying how to make equity & inclusion real, then we are draining time, money, and effort – and worse, running the risk of equity & inclusion fading into mere buzzwords.

This is why Jelly Social exists

Jelly Social is a non-profit organization that works with businesses to make equity & inclusion real. We offer corporate programs that are proven to turn equity & inclusion training into real-world application. This is how we achieve our social mission of elimianting all forms of bias and discrimination in the workplace. Here’s how your company can benefit through real equity & inclusion:

Want to start making equity & inclusion real in your company? Here are 3 things you can do...

We’ve put together 3 simple things that you can do as an employee, executive, intrapreneur, or entrepreneur to create an Anti-Racist workplace. Each time you do these, you are taking a tangible step to make anti-racism real in your company, your community, and your life. Check out these 3 things you can do:

1

Talk About
Anti-Racism at Work

There have been a lot of progressive conversations about anti-racism, and as a result we have seen entire institutions shift towards anti-racism. In an effort to keep those conversations going, we present to you a really simple challenge – start every workplace meeting with a 2-5 minute conversation about anti-racism. We call this the ‘Agenda Item #1’ pledge – we challenge you to commit to the pledge!

2

Connect
with Diverse Professionals

Think of the 10 people in your professional network that you interact with most often… Do at least 5 of them look the same? Then it’s time to bring more diversity into your network. A sign of anti-racism is having a professional network filled with diverse peers. We challenge you to make it a daily practice to connect with diverse peers who you may not ordinarily connect with.

3

Launch an
Anti-Racism Initiative

It’s true – racial discrimination exists in your company and community that impedes the ability for everyone to equitably succeed. However, you are a talented professional with the skills, influence, and drive to create change. We challenge you to launch an anti-racism project every 6 weeks – and to help you out with that challenge, we’ve created the Anti-Racism Accelerator. Click to learn more.

42% of professionals have experienced or witnessed racism in the workplace

The reality is that racism exists in our workplaces and our communities. This is mainly due to a legacy of racism and discrimination that forms the foundation of our country’s systems, policies, and laws. As a result, racism is everywhere – even in our own workplaces. And it impacts your company’s reputation, performance, and profitability. Source

71% of North Americans expect businesses to address systemic racism

The people have spoken. As our population grows more informed and conscious of the inequities in our society, they are also expecting businesses to do much more to address those inequities. Businesses have the abilities, resources, and influence to make great impact on anti-racism in our communities – and it’s time to put that to use. This is the new economy, and companies that embrace anti-racism can expect to thrive as a profitable corporate citizen. Source

BIPOC professionals earn $0.41-$0.62 for every $1 earned by white professionals

Whether we are aware of it or not, the way we do business is oppressive to many other races. Company policies, rules, and norms are oftentimes set up to enforce a standard of whiteness – meaning that professional success is tied to the adoption of white culture. If you don’t adhere to it, you can expect less opportunity to advance, less salary, and less decision-making authority. This obviously puts white professionals at an advantage, and forces BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) professionals into a position where they have to change who they are. No matter how much BIPOC professionals may change, we can never truly succeed as equals in a world that rewards whiteness. Source

The average BIPOC professionals simply has more obstacles to overcome than professionals from other communities; and those obstacles happen because of discrimination. For instance, when BIPOC professionals are rejected for loans because we’re stereotyped as being too high risk; or when our ethnic names cause us to lose out on jobs or contracts; or when influential people shut us out of their inner circles because they’d rather bring in people that look like them. BIPOC professionals can overcome these countless discriminatory obstacles; but it requires us investing extra time, money, and effort than the average professionals. That extra investment has a cost to it…

It costs BIPOC professionals 38-59% more to earn the same dollar as anyone else.

This is the BIPOC Penalty. The BIPOC Penalty is the extra time, money, and effort that BIPOC professionals have to spend to overcome racial discrimination. This results in an inequity that constantly puts BIPOC professionals at a disadvantage. Do you have a problem with that? Then you’re in the right place.
